The concept of being completely self sufficient and self sustaining is not a choice for many of us but we can still successfully grow our own fruit and vegetables. The quantity of fruit and vegetables you can grow will depend on the dimensions of your garden and your creativity. In the past, the majority of people were required to grow their own produce. We now live in a world of superstores and online shopping therefore it is not required anymore. But the trend of growing your own fruit and vegetables is rising again so we will take a look at the benefits.

One substantial benefit of growing your own vegetables is the money you can save especially during this current monetary turmoil. As individuals, we don’t really have any control over the overall economy but we are at the mercy of the effects, like higher food prices. However, as vegetables and fruit are rather easy to grow for yourself, you can really start to make a difference to your family budget with a little effort at the outset. You will be content in knowing that you will serve crops you made yourself and the cost of making it was minimal.

Lately we have seen a developing market for organic food and you will often see many different types of organically produced items in the shops. There is no doubting the health benefits of eating organically grown food. One disadvantage, however, is the expense and if you are on a tight budget it could be that you need to keep your outgoings down. Furthermore, you may at times question if the standards required to qualify a food as organic are high enough. These complications can be easily overcome by simply producing your own fruits, herbs and vegetables.

Since there is now a rising awareness of natural health alternatives, so more people are beginning to question what they eat and how fresh their food is. A lot of us have to make a conscious effort to be sure that the food we consume is filled with important nutrients. We are all mindful of the use by dates that you see on foods but this has nothing to do with guaranteeing that we eat food when it is most nutritious. We need to know how long before the food items were packaged before it got to store shelves. Also, many produce are picked way before they are ready in order that they arrive at the store looking fresh but lacking all the nutrients. If you grow your own vegetables, you will select your food when it is ready and it will possess all the nutrients you need.

Besides the financial savings and the wellness benefits, you will also have a great time doing it, so go ahead and make your own organic garden today.

Entry from: Shanghai, China
Entry Title: “EXPO NO!!! Shanghai Yes”

Entry:

“We had just about had all of the crowds we could handle. The EXPO was a massive undertaking and the Chinese are to be congratulated on an engineering feat and a true marvel. The venues were phenomenal and the contents for the most part were mostly mediocre. The four hour waits to get in were abysmal. We waited for only a couple of biggies, but Pam and I opted for the smaller countries and had a great time.

So with two days behind us, what were we going to do today. We had Tickets and Laura was not going to see them go to waste. We saw a family at breakfast and decided that we could improve foreign relations and do what we wanted to do at the same time. We gave them our Expo Tickets, 5 of them and you have never seen happier people. We finished our noodles and hard boiled egg, spicy pickles and bowsa and got to the subway station and found our way to the station at the pearl of the orient. We were4 going to get a birds eye view of downtown and the river, but the wait was just like EXPO. So we said ZX!# that and headed for the river. On the way, we saw a street sign that expressed our sentiments. At the river, we got our bearings and before we headed back to the Bund psychedelic tunnel, we decided to have some tea. This was a fore shadowing of our evening yet to come. I had a Moroccan ice tea with Lime and there was Vietnam Iced Tea and hot black tea and milk tea and diet coke. We were off to the tunnel.

This mode of transportation was part elevator, part sub way and part fun house carnival ride. Our idea was to do an evening cruise on the river and enjoy the lights, so we got on the walkway and headed toward the Boats. Short story, no cruises, all boats privately reserved for the holiday. We found a tourist info ctr. and purchased tickets for the open top tour bus and headed off to the Ancient City walking tour. But we needed something to eat before we started, so we found another food court and had some lunch. Japanese style dumplings, chicken on a stick and so forth. The crowds were again horrendous, so we split up again and we headed back to the bus and did a riding tour while the other three went walking through old Shanghai. The Bus tour suited our needs just fine and we were soon reunited with our friends and on our way back to the tunnel. Our intentions was to stop by the tea house we had enjoyed earlier and see about dinner.

We sat at the tea house for almost two hours watching the parade of boats and all the lights on the river. The military cadets were there as they had been on guard duty all day and they were just as excited about the light show as we were. The meals were splendid, the drinks were cold and refreshing, the wine was dry and red and the desert was sweet. The company and conversation was lively and we were excited about our change of venue tomorrow and our trip to Lake TaiFu and Wuxi. We were unsure of what to expect, but knew that Jeff would not steer us wrong on one of his hotels.

We were scheduled for a 10 am pickup and transfer and really didn’t know where we were going other than a dot on a map.”
